Skype

Yes I use Skype in my classroom in several ways. Last year we included  =20 a student in our class that had leukemia and couldn't come to school.  =20 (You might already know about this) She video skyped in as many days  =20 as she could and participated in class. We made a video about how we  =20 did this that has now been downloaded almost 100,000 times. It is =20 available on TeacherTube and also our class wiki page - see the link  =20 below. We also made connections with students in other parts of the country.  =20 We Skyped into Lee Baber's Class in Virginia (I'm in Nevada) and they  =20 interviewed the students about their "Inclusion" experience with the  =20 student noted above. People in New York and Texas and elsewhere =20 listened in and it is also a podcast. Grace Corrigan, who is Christa McCauliffe's mother (the teacher in =20 space that died when the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded in 1986) =20 visited my room and we Skyped her visit to Lee's class in Virginia and  =20 New York and we video taped in in our classroom. She shared many =20 stories about Christa and answered every question the students asked.  =20 That is available as a vidcast. There are links to all these esources  =20 on our class wiki page: [[crosbyclass:home|http://crosbyclass.wikispaces.com/]] I rolled my class from last year with me to fifth grade - only about  =20 half made it because we lost students to a re-zoning of our district.  =20 We just today arranged to Skype with Lee's class next Thursday ... and  =20 she and I already are making plans for other Skype connections with =20 teachers in Canada, South America and maybe Africa. I have also had teachers Skype into inservice trainings I do - Dean =20 Shareski from Canada has Skyped in and I have Skyped in teachers from  =20 New Zealand and Australia too - it always blows teachers minds when I  =20 have the teacher I am Skyping with tell where they are. I hope that helps. Let me know if you want more info ... maybe we could Skype. Skype just emailed me yesterday that they want to send a film crew to  =20 film what we do in class with Skype and wikis and Flickr and blogging  =20 ... we are supposed to talk about it tomorrow. Brian}}{{Tina - I just noticed you specifically asked about learning with   Skype. We write about almost everything we do on Skype. We compose and edit any questions we are going to ask people. We writs about our experiences on our blog ... it is a great   motivator for writing. My students are very at risk ... over 85% receive free lunch. Therefore anything we do helps them build schema for the real world. Wemake digital   videos mainly because I love how it forces them to pronounce words correctly and use proper   english (over half my class are second language learners). They also write the storyboard   and scripts and design shots and all that is involved ... very powerful language and   schema building experience. Brian}}
